Logline:
Based on the tragic true story of China’s first prima donna of the silver screen, Ruan Lingyu, chronicling her rise to fame as a movie actress in Shanghai during the 1930s. Nicknamed the "Chinese Garbo," Ruan Lingyu began her acting career when she was 16 and committed suicide at 24.
Trailer
In 1991, director Stanley Kwan directed Center Stage, a landmark of Chinese-language cinema. International superstar Maggie Cheung (In the Mood for Love) delivers a mesmerizing performance as silent film icon Ruan Lingyu, often hailed as the “Greta Garbo of China.” The film traces Ruan’s meteoric rise to stardom in 1930s Shanghai and her tragic downfall under the relentless scrutiny of the tabloid press, culminating in her suicide at the age of 24.
Far from a conventional biopic, Center Stage seamlessly blends lush period drama, clips from Ruan Lingyu’s original films, archival footage, and metatextual documentary interviews in which Maggie Cheung and Stanley Kwan reflect on Ruan’s life and legacy. Constantly shifting between history and the present, reality and performance, the film offers an intimate and richly layered exploration of Ruan’s inner world, while serving as a poignant meditation on cinema, womanhood, and the devastating cost of fame.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements of Hong Kong cinema, Center Stage remains as emotionally powerful today as it was upon its release.
